Profile
Stephen Avenue National Historic District is one of Canada’s most significant collections of late-19th and early-20th century sandstone commercial buildings. Stretching along 8 Avenue SW and SE, the district captures Calgary’s transformation from a frontier town into a thriving commercial centre.
The area showcases beautifully preserved architecture from Calgary’s “Sandstone City” era, with landmark façades, historic banks, warehouses, and department stores. Today, the district is a lively pedestrian zone filled with restaurants, cafés, boutiques, public art, and seasonal festivals.
Visitors can explore historic structures such as the Hudson’s Bay Company Building, the Grain Exchange Building, the Imperial Bank, the Burns Building, and more — all within a walkable heritage corridor that remains the cultural and social heart of downtown Calgary.
